Pension for a disabled person's child
If a person receives a disability pension under the Québec Pension Plan, his or her children, or those who have lived with him or her for at least one year are entitled to a pension for a disabled person's child until they turn 18, even if they work.
Conditions of payment
The pension is paid to a disability pension beneficiary who has dependent children. If the child lives with the beneficiary, the Régie considers that he or she provides for the child's needs. In that case, the pension for a disabled person's child and the disability pension are paid in a single monthly amount. Otherwise, the pension for a disabled person's child is paid to the person who cares for the child.
If a person has or adopts a child after he or she is deemed to be disabled, the child can receive a pension for a disabled person's child. However, the person must file an application.
Pension amount
In 2012, the monthly pension for a disabled person's child is 71,32$ for each child.
The pension for a disabled person's child and taxation
At the beginning of each year, the Régie sends a Relevé 2 slip for each child, indicating the total amount of benefits paid during the preceding year. Even if the pension for a disabled person's child is not paid directly to the child, it must nevertheless be included in the child's personal income, and not in the disability pension beneficiary's income.
The pension for a disabled person's child ends at age 18, or before if:
- disability pension stops being paid
- child dies
- child who is not the disabled person's son or daughter ceases to live with the disabled person
- child starts receiving another pension for a disabled person's child or an orphan's pension under the Québec Pension Plan or the Canada Pension Plan
.
If the disabled person dies, an orphan's pension may be payable.
