When are the payment dates?

The Régie makes child assistance and supplement for handicapped children payments (if applicable) 4 times a year: in January, April, July and October, on the first working day of those months.

For example, the payment that is made at the beginning of January covers January, February and March. However, payments can be made each month; simply file an application.

To whom are child assistance payments made?

Child assistance payments are made to only one person in a family. Certain rules are used to determine which spouse will receive the payments.

Spouses can agree to ask for a change of beneficiary in the family.

Is it possible to receive monthly payments?

Yes. However, a person must apply for monthly payments.

How is an overpayment reimbursed when a person is still eligible for child assistance payments?

If the Régie claims an overpayment from a person who is still eligible for child assistance payments, an amount will be deducted from each payment. The amount deducted is calculated based on the following rates:

  • 50% of the payment if the net annual family income is 35 000 $ or less. The Régie can deduct more than 50% if the amounts remaining to be paid to the beneficiary are insufficient to repay his or her debt at that rate. In certain cases, the Régie can withhold more than 50% of the payment even if the family income is less than or equal to 35 000 $.
  • 100% of the payment if the net annual family income is greater than 35 000 $.

It is also possible to repay an amount by cheque or postal money order. To do so, the person simply sends the Régie a payment made out to the Québec Minister of Finance. It is important that his or her social insurance number be indicated on the payment.

How is an overpayment reimbursed when a person is no longer eligible for child assistance payments?

A person who is no longer eligible for child assistance payments and who must repay an amount must do so as soon as possible. That person simply sends the Régie a cheque or postal money order made out to the Québec Minister of Finance. It is important that his or her social insurance number be indicated on the payment.

If the amount is not repaid within 90 days, the Régie transfers the file to Revenu Québec.

Revenu Québec then informs the person in writing of the amount that he or she must pay to the Minister of Finance in accordance with the terms mentioned on the notice. No interest will be charged if the person repays the amount within the time limit set by the minister. However, if payment is not made on time, interest will be calculated as of the deadline given by Revenu Québec.
