Amount and payment

Depending on the severity of the child's condition and age, he or she could be eligible for Tier 1 or Tier 2 of the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care, a greater amount is granted under Tier 1 than under Tier 2.

  • A monthly amount of $1 158 ($13 896 per year) will be paid for a child eligible under Tier 1.
  • A monthly amount of $770 ($9240 per year) will be paid for a child eligible under Tier 2.

The amount of the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care is added to the amount for the Supplement for Handicapped Children ($229 per month or $2748 per year).

The amounts are not taxable and are indexed in January of each year.

To whom is the supplement paid?

The Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care is paid to the person who receives the Family Allowance payments.

Payment conditions

You will receive your payments of the Supplement for Handicapped Children Requiring Exceptional Care 4 times a year, that is in January, April, July and October, on the scheduled payment dates.

If you would like to receive your payments on a monthly basis, you must complete a Change in Frequency of Family Allowance Payments form.

This financial assistance can be paid retroactively for a period of 11 months prior to the date on which we received your application, provided your child met all eligibility requirements This link will open in a new window.during that period.

When do payments end?

Payment stops when one of the following situations occurs:

  • your child no longer meets the eligibility requirements because his or her condition has improved
  • the beneficiary is no longer eligible for the Family Allowance.
