Family Allowance payment

Family Allowance and, if applicable, the Supplement for Handicapped Children are paid 4 times a year, on the scheduled payment dates, that is:

  • in July for July, August and September;
  • in October for October, November and December;
  • in January for January, February and March;
  • in April for April, May and June.

To receive your payments on a monthly basis, you must complete a Change in Frequency of Family Allowance Payments form.

The Family Allowance payments are made to only one person in a family. Certain rules are used to determine which spouse will receive the payments.

Spouses can agree to ask for a change of beneficiary in the family.

Yes. However, a person must apply for monthly payments.

If we claim an overpayment from a person who is still eligible for the Familay Allowance payments, an amount will be deducted from each payment. The amount deducted is calculated based on the following rates :

  • 50% of the payment if the net annual family income is $35 000 or less. We can deduct more than 50% if the amounts remaining to be paid to the beneficiary are insufficient to repay his or her debt at that rate. In certain cases, we can withhold more than 50% of the payment even if the family income is less than or equal to $35 000.
  • 100% of the payment if the net annual family income is greater than $35 000.

It is also possible to repay an amount by cheque or postal money order. To do so, the person simply sends us a payment made out to the Québec Minister of Finance. It is important that his or her social insurance number be indicated on the payment.

A person who is no longer eligible for the Family Allowance payments and who must repay an amount must do so as soon as possible. That person simply sends us a cheque or postal money order made out to the Québec Minister of Finance. It is important that his or her social insurance number be indicated on the payment.

If the amount is not repaid within 90 days, we transfer the file to Revenu Québec.

Revenu Québec then informs the person in writing of the amount that he or she must pay to the Minister of Finance in accordance with the terms mentioned on the notice. No interest will be charged if the person repays the amount within the time limit set by the minister. However, if payment is not made on time, interest will be calculated as of the deadline given by Revenu Québec.
