Death and the Family Allowance

  • In most cases, the Directeur de l'état civil notifies us of the death of a parent.
  • If the death is not declared to the Directeur de l'état civil or if it occurred outside Québec, you must provide us with proof of death.
  • If the deceased was receiving the Family Allowance payment or the supplement for handicapped children, those payments will stop. The child's new caregiver must file a new Application for Family Allowance.
  • If a beneficiary's spouse dies, the Family Allowance will be recalculated to take into account the new situation (single-parent family). You can use the simulation tool CalculAide to get an estimate of the new amounts that could be paid.

Information about the documents to be provided

Note that you can provide clear and legible copies of the documents. If necessary, we may request the original documents or certified true copies.
