Old Age Security program

The Old Age Security pension is a monthly benefit paid to Canadians. To receive it, you must:

  • be 65 or older
  • have a legal status in Canada
  • have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after age 18.

The Old Age Security pension is indexed on the basis of the cost of living four times a year (January, April, July and October). It is taxable income.

Guaranteed Income Supplement

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is added to the Old Age Security pension. It is not taxable income.

To receive the GIS, your income and the income of your spouse (married or de facto, whether same sex or opposite sex) must not exceed a set amount.
