Québec Pension Plan

  • The death benefit is a taxable one-time payment of 2 500 $. It is paid on a priority basis to the person or charitable organization that paid the funeral expenses. After 60 days, it can be paid to the heirs.
  • If the deceased left a spouse, she or she may be entitled to a surviving spouse's pension. To be recognized as the surviving spouse, certain rules apply
  • To apply for a death benefit or a surviving spouse's pension, use the online Application for Survivors' Benefits.

Supplemental pension plans

  • A death benefit may be payable to one of the following: the surviving spouse, a designated beneficiary or the heirs of the deceased. To find out the plan's provisions, contact the plan's representative. His or her address and telephone number can be found in our online service for consultation of supervised pension plans.

LIRAs or LIFs

  • The balance of a locked-in retirement account (LIRA) or a life income fund (LIF) is paid to the surviving spouse, if any. Otherwise it is paid to the heirs of the deceased.
