Other pensions and benefits following the death of a parent
Supplemental pension plans
- A death benefit may be payable to one of the following: the surviving spouse, a designated beneficiary or the heirs of the deceased. To find out the plan's provisions, contact the plan's representative. His or her address and telephone number can be found in our online service for consultation of supervised pension plans.
LIRAs or LIFs
- The balance of a locked-in retirement account (LIRA) or a life income fund (LIF) is paid to the surviving spouse, if any. Otherwise it is paid to the heirs of the deceased.
Other programs
Did the deceased have a private or group insurance policy? Had he or she worked elsewhere in Canada or outside Canada? See other aid programs available.
